John has worked in the Theatre and Live Events Industries since 1986. Having studied Stage Management at Guildford School of Acting, John went on to complete residencies at several regional theatres including York Theatre Royal, the Churchill Theatre Bromley and Richmond Theatre as well as freelance production and conference work at home and abroad - clocking up some 700 fit-ups and get-outs. John joined Milton Keynes Theatre as Technical Manager for its opening in 1999 and in 2006 he was promoted to General Manager. During this time John production managed several national touring and West End productions.
In 2010 John switched disciplines and became Safety and Environmental Advisor for Ambassador Theatre Group. In 2011 John was chosen for the newly-created role of Head of Technical Services at ATG, which involved overseeing the technical management, capital projects, training and infrastructure of the group’s UK and international venues and productions. In 2013 John pioneered the provision of Technical Theatre Apprenticeships at ATG - successfully collaborating with Industry partners to create an award-winning* scheme.
John has trained over 2,000 people in 23 different technical and safety disciplines. A Graduate Member of IOSH, John holds an NCRQ Level 6 Diploma in Applied Health and Safety, the NEBOSH NGC plus FPA and NEBOSH Fire and Risk Management Certificates. He has conducted Fire Risk Assessments in over 60 premises and completed over 200 Production Risk Assessments.
As well as being Director of JYCI, John chairs the Creative Venue Technician Trailblazer Apprenticeship consortium. He is a director of Skillscene, a guest lecturer at the Universities of Bedfordshire and Surrey and a member of the steering group for the National College for the Creative Industries. John was a trustee-director of the Association of British Theatre Technicians from 2014-2020, and remains a fervent member of the ABTT's Training & Education Committee.
